If you want to maximze your carrier/flight options, I would transfer UA miles to CO and book through CO.
There may a be a difference between CO and UA on a legal routing to OZ. Last year I found a route to SYD via ICN. On the phone I was told that that routing would require two awards and was not legal for a single North America to Oz award (called back twice).
But, I was able to find legal routing to SYD this month on CO using the Web search thorugh BKK,ICN and SIN, so maybe its possible through CO
