It's hard to say for certain without knowing which exact fare you purchased (there should be something called a Fare Basis on your eticket). However, looking at the GDS for today, the cheapest fare showing is Fare Basis QZRUS, and this has a USD500.00 cancel fee if more than 24 hours from ETD, and a full loss of fare within 24 hours of ETD. The same penalties seem to apply for most of their cheaper fares (those with a Fare Basis starting with Q, V, N, E, G, O), with the more expensive fares (K, R, H) having a USD300.00 fee for > 24 hours and full loss < 24 hours, and only the really expensive (B, Y) fares able to be cancelled right up to departure for a full refund.
Post your Fare Basis and someone should be able to help. Or just ring VA.
Not what you wanted to hear, but that's the way it goes - the cheaper the fare you buy, the less flexibility you have.
