OP is flying from the UK, not the US. Both also have flights on A380s but either way he'll end up in T3 as you say.

Agreed about T1 lounge. If no lounge access, I think you still have to go to T1 for a smelly smoking room or the Irish Pub.
It'd be good to know if the elevator trick on arrival works. I've never heard of it before.
