After a lot of confusion, I finally got what is probably the definitive answer. I have to commence flying by July 9, 2011 (the redeem by date) and finish by July 8, 2012 (the one-year limitation). The explanation given me is that because flights can be changed/cancelled, Delta considers a certificate redeemed only if it has been used for a flight. Thus, the "redeem by" date should be thought of as a "initiate travel by" date.
