Well, they don't directly ask if you're a student, but as I recall, they ask some "establishing" questions at the beginning to determine if you're the type of person they want to ask.
I can't imagine that the subset of people who are both AFKL Frequent Flyers and students (excluding further or adult education) is all that large. Considering that the marketeers are addressing questions to a group of people that have one thing in common - frequent flying/elite status - I can't imagine that they were particularly expecting to meet (young and poor are a cliché but perhaps representative) students. I would therefore have expected that the "establishing" questions would most likely lead to rejection.
Just an assumption on my part - but apparently I was wrong anyway! The Dutch questionnaires seem to be targeted at quite a narrow spectrum - perhaps the UK questionnaires are more general and they care less about weeding out respondents.
