Correct, my advice according to Cathay has two +.
First,
Excellent J product. You will never see such a nice product on BA (mainly soft product) and never but never on any US carrier. Think it as an experience.
Secondly, you will be able to visit a warm place with different culture when you'll have winter at SFO. My advice is to book a stop over at HKG and then choose a destination in Asia that fit you needs. This can be a warm sunny island or an Asian capital.
Then you also have the Jal option, should have plenty of availability those days
