depends what you goals are. It seems like Venture points are basically just $.01 credits that you can use to offset the cost of a ticket. With ticket prices rising I'm not sure how useful they are unless you just plan to use them on "cheap" coach tickets.

If your goal is to use miles/points for long haul premium class tickets then something like SPG makes a bit more sense to me. As long as the airline program you want to use has a 1:1 transfer rate.
