"Fly-by" lane in Pittsburgh-complaint
I'm sending this to WN separately but I wanted to vent on Flyertalk how disappointed I am with the Pittsburgh airport "first class" lane (which Southwest got their name added to a year or two ago).
Southwest's web site advertises that Fly-by is available at this airport in the designated lane.
On two occasions, Thursday May 5th at 3:30pm, and Friday April 15th at 6:30am, the line for security was through the outer doors heading to the parking lot people movers. Unlike other SUCCESSFUL Fly-by airports, there were just as many people in the First Class TSA line as any other line. There is no enforcement, there are no representatives making announcements or verifying people are in the right line, there are no stanchions.
Both times, I then tried going upstairs to the alternate screening. In April I cut my way to the front of the line, and after asking where the real 1st class checkpoint was, the TSA person let me through the airline employee entrance. Last week they turned me away to go back down stairs.
I politely inquired with the TSA "Lead Officer" checking boarding passes for that line and she said this *IS* the first class line. When I mentioned I thought most of the people were not first class or business select, she commented "that's unfortunate". I asked if she was doing anything to enforce this or if they could please make announcements so people didn't wait in the wrong line before being turned away. She said why would I turn anyone away, it's not our job to enforce. I pointed out that the folks at the end of the line don't even see the notice saying first class until they get up close. Again she said that was unfortunate. She told me to complain to my airline and send someone from Southwest down (to stand full time and enforce.) I asked for a supervisor and a comment card and the supervisor in the podium with the airport police repeated the same things, admitting they do zero to enforce and denying it was their responsibility. For my efforts I was rewarded with a double extra full TSA patdown after they made me wait an extra 10 minutes for a male assist. They did NOT want to give up a comment card until it became obvious that I was not going to leave until I got one.
We missed our flight, another disappointment as we were running to the gate, and had arrived at the LAST row of chairs (where preboards stand) less than 15 feet from the gate as the gate agent walked across the door and started unhooking it to close it. My wife, dragging our small child yelled wait, the rep looked up and saw her, and refused to acknowledge her, and closed the door and walked down the jetway. I confirmed the flight did not go out full (our seats hadn't been given to standbys).
If Southwest can take the lead to improve the process and fix what is broken, great. If not, please remove all references to Fly-By at Pittsburgh airport from your website. For the first step all they need to do is send down a supervisor to look at the lines during busy times, and observe if TSA Screeners send anyone to the correct lines.
