Back to the original question, I'm pretty sure that linking your PNR or having someone else on the same PNR is going to reduce your op-up chances as it's always easier to upgrade someone travelling alone rather than multiple people at once.
Yes, when I travel with non-status work colleagues I always make sure that I'm on a different PNR even when travelling same itinerary for this very reason.
