I won´t get into your "reactionary" comment. Let us stick to facts.
We know walk through metal detectors currently have trouble detecting stuff close to the floor. Instead of solving the technical problem, the TSA has adopted a policy that inconveniences millions, while not adding to security. It is so inconvenient they have not managed to convince foreign airports to adopt it. It is also ineffective, since people manning the X-rays will miss items routinely (not only due to incompetence, it is a property of the human brain).
Having said that, I do agree with you that knives are no big deal and should not be a concern.
