Taxi drivers in Honolulu are bad. Well they do no rip you off or are dishonest in that sense, but they do not understand English very well and usually have no clue about specific addresses. When I first came here I had brought with me a print out from Google Maps with the address which I showed to the driver. The taxi driver had to talk with some other people at the airport to figure out where I was going. He also become obsessed with the country name (USA in Norwegian is translated into Amerikas Forente Stater on the Norwegian version of Google Maps, which is correct but people in Norway say USA) so he wondered what that was and did not care about the address. I think the taxi drivers know where the hotels in Waikiki are, but clearly a non hotel address in Waikiki was too much.

Even in Hilo the taxi driver drove me to the wrong place. I thought I had clarified for him that i was going to the Hilo Bay HOSTEL, but he drove me to Hilo Bay Hotel first. Well probably just a misunderstanding as we were both foreigners (but the taxi drivers in Hawaii speak and understand English less than most Europeans do). Well probably nothing compared to taxi drivers in Moscow. What I have heard is that it is not worth taking them if you don't speak Russian, but in Moscow you have the Aeroexpress and metro which is very good. The taxi drivers in Istanbul are not that bad if you manage to find a honest one who uses the meter. I found a honest one two out of three times I used a taxi there (two intra city trips, randomly hailed from the street and one out from the hotel out to Atatürk airport which I actually also hailed from the street just outside the hotel).

Oslo's taxi drivers had a bad reputation when it came to escaping taxation. But the police and the authorities cleaned it whole up some years ago so the bad ones are in jail or out of business. Today they are pretty good, but not cheap. You can ask them to go to any address, any hotel or even most bars and they will take you there, but the price of taking a taxi makes you want to stay away from them anyway.
