A nonstop is only 5+ hours and much less hassle to get where you are going. And on an award ticket ? I would save my miles for something better like IAD-NRT/BKK/SIN on ANA & TG in F or I .

There is no nonstop out of DCA on Star Alliance.

Depending on where the OP is, schlepping to IAD can cost significant additional time, especially in traffic and/or with public transit, which could mitigate some of the negatives with the connection options.

But normally I'd agree with you, particularly on an award ticket.
