I rented a one-day from Hertz in Manhattan two weeks ago (took the train last weekend when I couldn't get the availability) and used a 1-day free award.

Although I returned the vehicle with a full tank, when I got my receipt today in the mail it had charged me $82 for fuel--it said I had returned the car empty. When I called the billing number, an automated option was for "Fuel questions or other billing issues." When I told the agent what happened, she refunded the fuel without question.

Has this happened to anybody else? The fact that they refunded it, no questions asked, makes me think they encounter this issue fairly often, but I certainly will never drop-off a car again without having someone note the fuel in my presence...
