It never occurred to me that anyone would book an intercontinental flight with the intention of upgrading, unless the upgrade were confirmed at time of booking.
its not as simple as it used to be....i try to up grade all flights i book [almost], and aa is still reasonably uncomplicated compared to others....certain trips require fixed dates & one hopes that the ug will clear...
