I've done this before when I purchased a flexible ticket for the dates I wanted. I then had to change the departure airport and the UA agent repriced. I specifically asked to go into a more restricted fare bucket and was refunded the difference. Saved me $300. Did not have to pay a change fee as it was a flexible res to begin with.
