As J.C. said, there is quite the spread, you just have to know where to look. High rise apartments are a relatively new thing to JKT, they first western style apt complex was built until the 1980's, now they are springing up all over the city. Houses (for expats) do tend to be on the huge side, however, smaller ones are here, few and far between. What part of the city are you looking to live in? Houses may be cheaper than apartments.
