Each member needs to have activity to their account alive. However, if one account is zero'd, the other HHA members will retain their balances.

Remember, in a HHA, ANY redemption takes miles from all 3 accounts, pro-rata to their balances, and thus keeps ALL accounts alive for a further 3 years. It may be 'cheaper' to do a one-way redemption, eg LHR-MAN for 4,500 miles plus tax (and not fly it) which would create some activity in each account than to buy 1,000 miles for each HHA member, which is the other obvious alternative.
