I suggest you call AA CS and ask for more; I think AA will give you more miles if you ask nicely. In your case, I think you would be justified.
As for the WN comparison, WN has given free roundtrips but that only happens under extreme circumstances (such as when the WN plane exited the MDW runway recently and passengers had to evacutate the plane). WN often gives nothing for regular mechanical delayes; of course YMMV (human CS give different things depeding on the day).
