Well I checked in this morning and managed to get an xx36 suite. And the view is exactly what I was wanting.
That said, only drawback is that it is not renovated and the bathroom is creepily outfitted for older clientele (think handle bars around the toilet and extra high seat). It reminds me of my great grandmother's house.
If I wasn't here for just one night I would probably try to make the switch.
Other than the room, I love the view from the infinity pool and the location seems quite convenient.
Your room sounds like the room I ended up in although mine was renovated (it still smelled of paint

)! The suite with the "funny" bathroom is an ADA room for disabled guests...hence the handle bars and seats over the bath and separate shower. Our make up mirror was at hip level and the vanity area around the basin was very small with a HUGE gap in the room where there was nothing. I assume it was to allow a wheelchair to come up close to the mirror perhaps?? If not, its bad planning because the vanity area was smaller than the vanity in the Royal Hawaiian bathrooms and certainly not enough room for two people to store all their bathroom toiletries, IMHO.
We also had a very large room that just had a toilet and hand basin it it - again I guess it was to allow room for a wheelchair. Unusually though, there was ONLY one toilet in the whole suite, the main bathroom did not have a toilet, which I found quite strange. Are the other Kai suites like this too?
I stayed 4 nights and could NOT get a suite upgrade for the first night but did get a premium ocean view. We were then moved to the Kai suite xx35 (ADA) room on a lower floor. Despite my checking more than once, we could not get a high floor suite as they were sold out. I was advised that floor 25-29 are all SMOKING rooms, and I like a non-smoking room. The suite was lovely, spacious and we loved the view ^. Our suite had WIFI as well as cable so that was great. I cant understand why they did not equip all the renovated rooms with WIFI in this day and age. Seems strange.
I thought the view from the suite was ocean front...but I have read here that is not the case...hmmm so what was that large body of water straight outside of our lanai then??

. We didnt have the Diamond Head view but could see it from our lounge room lanai and we saw the sunsets from our bedroom lanai. One issue with these xx35 suites that we experienced was the noise from the Edge Bar until after midnight, despite it supposedly closing at midnight. The music is very loud and it made it hard to sleep before midnight. As I travel with kids, I am not out partying, so that was not a welcome feature to me. We also found there were noise issues via the connecting doors in both the suite and the standard room, you CAN hear your neighbours unfortunately
I agree with others here who have said that the new rooms lack a Hawaiian feel, they are quite generic Sheraton now. My daughter commented that she felt she could be in any of the many Sheraton's we stay at during the course of the year, although she did love the large suite

.
We loved the club lounge and found the evening food selection to be quite good and for our small appetites it was enough. I felt the breakfast perhaps needs a staple of eggs each day, however it changes daily and one day they just had some salami type sausage and french toast. I like to have hot eggs available. No free wine or beer was disappointing, as all other club lounges I have been in, do offer a choice of free beverages. The view is unbeatable and there are plenty of tables. It is a very large room for a club lounge. Several of the lounge staff were excellent and one lady called to welcome me to the hotel and invite me to lounge ^.
I was told that they are "re-working" their Plat Amenity for offsetting the resort fee and that nothing was available

. I let the check in agent know that I was not happy with this as I was not parking car, internet and water is supposed to be free for me and we dont use the Edge pool or the phone etc and the agent eventually agreed to waive the resort fee. I said I would be happy to pay half of the fee, but the agent just said, no its fine

^.
We had some housekeeping issues in our first room which were quite off-putting to say the least

. However, I found the staff to be excellent in trying to make things right, when notified of the issues.
My main disappointment at this property (and the RH next door) is the lack of available pool chairs until late in the afternoon. People were down at the pool at 6.30AM reserving their chairs and then not returning until after breakfast. One morning I was up around 8.30am and I looked out of my lanai and EVERY SINGLE chair had a towel or belongings on it at BOTH pools! The only available chairs were the ones you had to pay and reserve and they were booked in advance for 3 days solid

. I am not sure what the answer is here, clearly there are way TOO many guests for pool chairs given that the hotel is 1600+ rooms and seemed to be quite full. We found throughout our whole stay that we could only get chairs together after around 4pm. When you are on holidays, you dont want to HAVE to get up at the same time you would to get to work, just to get a darn pool chair.
On our last day, we noticed that some guests were being dodgy

. Grandma and Grandpa were staying at the hotel but Mum, Dad, and their kids and cousins were all there with chairs (6 extra persons), yet they were staying further down the beach at the Outrigger. I found this out because was sitting right next to them and heard the whole conversation, as the Mum was VERY loud and didnt seem to care who heard her conversations

. Somehow, through the course of the day, they had managed to get the wrist bands (dont ask me HOW, as the pool staff were very good at checking that guests had the wrist bands)!
