If he doesn't have luggage to checkin, for sure he can spend all day in the lounge. Probably even if he has luggage to drop.
I assume that he could even do a regular checkin as early as he wants on the same day. My experience at least, not on BA but on several carriers is that they do allow (at least at their home airport, when they've always staff) checkin at several hours before the flight takes off (LH did 5 hours before in ZRH, KE did 7 hours before in Seoul and SQ did 4 hours before in SIN) so just assuming it's the same on BA, he should be fine.
