Received the following information from Victorinox: the Werks Traveler 4.0 22" has "basically the same" wheels and handle as the 2.0 version. Thus, the "new" 22" should be very similar to the old 22" I dumped. I still don't want believe that a 2011 model bag will have the issues that the 2005 era had.

A luggage store said they measured the 4.0 22" with wheels and it came out to be an extra 0.5" for 22.5" in total. Which seems innocuous as well.

That said, the luggage store said the wide 20" was becoming popular with Europeans. And Victorinox also volunteered the wide 20" without prompt and said "it seems to work well as an international carry on piece".

Conclusion:
- 20" is the safest bet.
- Wide 20" is a very safe bet with more space.
- 22" would be largest bag, but with potential carry-on issues. Although I suspect the 22" would work on a lot of planes.
