I do not think that it is necessary to tip front desk staff/reception for an escort to one`s room. At most of the hotels I stay at regularly I receive in room check-in and never tip for it, as it is simply a routine part of the check-in process.

When I travel in places where tipping is customary, I tend to tip housekeeping, bell staff, room service, and sometimes the concierge if they are very helpful. I am probably most generous with tips for housekeeping, especially if they do a very good job. Even though I am often not there when they are in my room, I want them to know I appreciate their services.

I don`t know who thought of the title "Host" for the reception/concierge at Andaz hotels, but I think it sounds very strange. If Andaz ever opened up a property in Japan, they`d definitely have to change that title!
