My favorite current bag is a very lightweight Delsey that is 20.75" tall, 8" thick (when not extended) and 15.5" wide. This is actual measured size, including all wheels and handles. Clearly 1.5" wider than the 14" standard.
I have no problem with any mainline aircraft, and I don't feel guilty taking up a tiny bit of width, as at least I am taking only 15.5", and not 24" like some other people with their bags not fitting the long way. Will also fit Jetblue's E190, sideways of course.
No experience with CR7 or CR9.
Now, with CR2 or ERJs, basically all airlines ask that to be gate-checked. As expected. With one exception. Mesa's go! in Hawaii. Their carry-on limit is 22"x14"x9" like others, but you actually have to bring it onboard! They had a sizer, but once they saw that my bag is short and thin enough to start going into it, they wave me on. Otherwise, I had to pay $10 for the inter-island flight.
Well, this is the only time I had a problem with this Delsey. Apparently, 22"x14"x9" can actually fit a CR2 sideways; but with the extra 1.5", the bin door won't close. Fortunately, I was traveling with someone, and that bag does fit underneath the B/C seats, taking up basically every inch of that space.
So, no issue with a wide 20", with one exception. YMMV.
