Your job isn't just to open the door, it's to first determine whether the door can safely be opened. Sometimes, inaction is the correct action. Thus, they need people who can remain calm and rational under stress.

On US Airways 1549, didn't one of the passengers or FAs open up a door that was partially submerged, thus letting water in?
