My method too.

Check in. Go to room. Take a nice shower. Leave. Put DND on door. Call front desk the day you want to check out to complete transaction and tell them that you left the DND on the door but you are out of the room and it is vacant.

(I like to show that I actually eneted the room and "occupied" it, if only that means using the bathroom or messing up the bed.)
