There's really not much security around it at all... think about it. Your SM number is on your card, your bag tags, every BP you ever print. So is your name. Really all that's left between someone with malicious intent and your itineraries + SkyMiles balance is a 4 digit numeric PIN. And yes, I know that almost everywhere your SkyMiles # is, your name likely is too... but when it is so thin to begin with, every extra piece of authentication helps with security.
But if you really hate entering your name all the time... just enter the first 4 letters. Seriously... it works.
