Won't UA/CO or HA just grab up the HND slot if AA gives it up?

Bad idea IMO. HND is prime real estate, just horrible hours. AA should at least cling on to HND until they open up the restrictive hours for daytime landings and departures.

Besides, doesn't AA already have JBV with JL to allow for more freedom in scheduling landing and departure times at HND? NH seems to be doing really well on their late night LAX departure/early morning HND arrival flights, maybe AA could check into that instead of just giving up so easily.

Not really so convenient considering public transit access to HND at those hours. AA lands just before the cutoff of public transit into Tokyo and in order check-in at HND for the 6AM flight, you have to be there or book a nearby hotel at HND -2 hrs which is impossible to do since public transit in Tokyo doesn't start up again until 4:30.

If AA could swap the landing to an early morning arrival and depart late in the evening, it would work better. But AA has it the other way around.
