The difference is how far one can extend their legs forward. At the knees row 1 has more room. But if you like to straighten your legs under the seat in front of you then row 1 is very bad as there is a wall there; row 6 would be much better in this case.
Basically it depends on what position your father is more comfortable in.

My parents are about 5'5" and 5'7" - not sure they need the EML section... The upgrade is $35 per seat, each way... plus their airfare was already pretty expensive for the short EWR-MCO flight - so I can't really justify an additional $140.
Not sure if the bulkhead will be annoying - I prefer to put my feet under the seat in front of me... but I didn't know if JetBlue travelers really enjoyed row 1 or would opt for a regular row (like 6) instead... this usually isn't an issue for me as I am usually in United's Economy Plus - and all their bulkheads have cutouts for your feet as well!
