Doesn't hurt to ask. Happened to me once in AMS and the desk agent was helpful enough to start hitting away at the keyboard, picked up the phone once or twice, and after several minutes I was checked onto the earlier flight.

I didn't purchase the ticket so I might have been on some full-fare tariff, or maybe the next plane was overbooked so they were happy as heck to load me onto the earlier one?
