The London-Austria flight is totally seperate from the Etihad one. Which means, I get my bags back in London and have to check them in again.

most major airlines have interline agreements to check bags thru when a trip involves multiple carriers....i don't know if lh & ethiad have one, but it's possible....checking thru saves some hassle....
you present both tickets at checkin, if you want to check thru...
have you looked to see if theres an earlier flight?....good luck...
