Who's right? Don't know. But I can say history is littered with electronic waste that was to be the "next great thing". No company can afford to jump onto every bandwagon.
Microsoft will be launching a tablet OS within the next year, so I wouldn't take their downplay of the iPad too seriously.
IMO, tablets are the next smartphones. The only thing you can't do on an iPad with wifi and 3G is make traditional phone calls. With the advent of mobile voice over ip, you wont want to anyway. I can call my wife on Skype for free from anywhere in the world that I can get wifi or 3G service.
Agreed, you can't jump on every bandwagon...but there used to be a saying in the IT industry, "you don't get fired for buying IBM". Now you can't buy an IBM PC, perfect example of not recognizing paradigm shifts when they are right in front of your face.
