Bangkok hotel location advice, May 3 - May 6

I have been hanging around at MP a lot lately and posted my question there. Even received a few very helpful responses (thanks, Kalboz and Kwai). However FT appears to have a bigger and more active group and I shall be grateful for your advice.

My flight reaches BKK May 3 at 11PM. Leaves May 6 at 8AM. Questions:

1. I assume there's no pint fumbling around with trains at midnight, and I should just take a cab?

2. Which area of the city should I target for a hotel. I'd relatively cheap (<$50?), with the following:

a. Air-conditioning!
b. Breakfast
c. Close to at least one train line
d. Easy to get a cab between 4AM-5AM

Outright recommendations are welcome. Otherwise please tell me your thoughts on the area, and your favorite booking site, and I'll look.

3. Will it be too hot to see the city during daytime?

Thanks!
