I reckon European merchants have a right to deny overpriced payment systems (in the sense it has to be manned) like swipe and sign or cash.
Just as long as there's a workaround for us international travellers, and there is.

it may seem overpriced to us, but from the European merchants' perspective, why impose additional costs to local customers so we int'l customers can enjoy the same price?
