I've seen these scanners in place but not being used. Like anything new it takes a while (and more effort) to let everyone get used to them.
Of course I don't see the benefit either. You still need an individual to monitor the boarding process. Is the goal to have multiple scanners so people can board quicker? As it currently is the bottle neck is in the plane, not out at the gate.
