I figure that you can easily replace clothes on relatively short notice. The computer, not as much.
What would be difficult? Almost all boxes I have seen recently would easily fit in my carry-on.
I certainly would do this if it was critical, if my clothes get lost I can bill the company for a shopping trip.
When I used to ski I carried on my boots. Always carry on whatever is most critical, with the exception of recreational drugs :-)
