I have to pay a landscaper to do a major project for me, and He'll let me give him mastercards for the value of project and he'll get supplies that way, so I want the double points if possible via Amex...Also get double fuel perks too!
I assume it would credit as a grocery purchase. As I understand, AMEX credits bonus points based on how the merchant is classified. It has nothing to do with the type of products you buy at the merchant.
If you typically receive 2x points from this merchant then you should have no problem with getting the points for giftcards.
This is pure speculation based on my understanding of how the process works --someone correct me if I am wrong.
