That's a bad assumption, this isn't even close to an award stay.
Are you sure this was from SPG? The property is SVO and I don't know why SPG would be trying to sell SVO properties.
I took advantage of this in Maui several years ago and it was clear that availability was limited, that you needed to book several months in advance (which I did), etc.
Not returning calls that have been committed is not acceptable - next time you call I'd ask to speak to a supervisor/manager. I'd also explain the situation and see what can be worked out.
