Perhaps the issue was just that the catering crew only loaded tableware for the 12 F seats in a 734, instead of the 16 F seats in a 738. Even if the extra meals were present, there may not have been enough plates to go around.
That's exactly what happened. No big deal, given the circumstances, I just wish the meal was edible.
