Square tweets a lot and it's in the Apple app store and Android market. So there's little discretion to be had.
As for 1099's - in Square's FAQ they indicate there will be no 1099's for tax year 2011. Only starting for 2012. Though they contradict that by referring to the user agreement section that refers to the legal requirement of reporting customers who process $20K AND have 200+ transactions.
And frankly that won't ever bother me, I stay so far below the radar and won't hit those limits in any year. I prefer methods that have no tax implications and don't cost even 1%. Square is simply an urgent means to an end where necessary when other means aren't an option.
If someone else is willing to find out, contact SquareUp and ask for clarification, go for it.
