Of course, this is probably NOT a good idea at smaller stores, or when in a hurry, but maybe when having some time and at a larger brand/hotel, why not do it? If a Marriott can't bill you on RMB when you tell them so on your Visa, why should they deserve a penny? What would they really do? Call the police over their scam? Especially when you've a company behind you, that would be pretty much suicide for them.
It maybe sounds crazy, but if we could get enough people to do so, what would be their choice be? The slip clearly says we had a choice - well, if they can't give me that choice after refusing to be billed in foreign currency, then I was clearly scamed and thus have no reason to actually pay the bill, isn't it?
It really seems to get out of hand, with more and more countries moving over to the DCC scam - I'm only travelling regularely since 3 years, and 3 years ago I can tell you I never realised about DCC, it has started during the last 2 years and got worse every time.. I think when I posted the first time in this thread, I was still under the impression that it happens because some banks try to generate some free money on the unknown traveller, now it feels more like most banks world-wide are joining in scamming people without choice.
Complaining won't help. Heck, I honestly believe most of the hotels don't even know they are charging in non-RMB currency (though I think some do). Hence I've gotten into many heated arguments. Hence it's a sneaky scam. The only way is to figure out how to break all of these POS machines and arm travelers with the know how.

ATM's. You won't get ripped off, you'll get real bills, and no fees (except for your bank).
This question is something several of us here in the China forum are working on building into our
guide. Please check it out. Right now we only have stuff on scams posted, but more info will be posted in the next week (Banks, exchanging money etc). Please be patient as we build it up. Suggestions welcome.
