That analysis ignores the fact that you were entitled to be "walked". That means you shouldn't have to pay for the first night AT ALL, making your revised cost $450, not $900.
Keep holding their feet to the fire. Has Amex confirmed that they actually declined a charge from this place? Sounds more like they went fishing through their prepaid (i.e., lower revenue) bookings and bonged them wholesale to open up rooms to rent at rack rate.
