I agree this apples if you're renting just the vehicle and don't want insurance, but if you're using the all-inclusive rates the majors push to the UK market (and they're not always bad value, either...) then you probably won't save anything at all.
It's easy enough to compare the rates for renting on the airport versus renting off the airport, even for rates for foreigners which include insurance coverage. One should also price an off-airport pickup with a return to the airport: sometimes there is no extra charge for dropping the car back at the airport.

Even if the base rate is the same for on-airport and off-airport locations, higher fees imposed at some airport locations may result in a significant difference in the total cost.
