BT confirmed that there's no need for an engineer visit, and the call centre guy that Mrs Mac spoke to had no idea why there would be a two week wait ('maybe it's something to do with all the bank holidays' was the best he could manage).

Agreed - the two week wait (and complete inability to explain why) is merely the impetus to find a new supplier. As noted above, I dislike BT anyway.
