As I've have never had to deal with a situation like this before, I had to refer to BA's General Conditions of Carriage for guidance. Now that I've read this tomb of weasely verbage I am a little clearer on the subject.

While you may have paid for your girlfriend's ticket, your contractual connection with BA (if this exists in contract) only applies in relation to ticket refunds. The contract of carriage is between BA (or an authorised agent if the booking was made by a travel agent) and the passenger, your girlfriend. Therefore any change to her booking would require a instruction directly from your girlfriend to BA or its authorised agent.

But strangely enough, If she were to try to change the ticket herself - say an upgrade or re-routing - and that incurred an additional payment, then they will not accept the change unless made by the person originally making the booking. Sounds crazy . . . .
