"hello ms smith speaking how can I help"
It is a daft rule, I had it with my wife recently where we were on separate PNRs recently, I have previously used the above trick though, if pretending to be a male friend as opposed to a lady, I suspect they knew but what can they do!
In fact what I did was call back later, handed the phone to a female family member who identified herself as Miss Smith before handing it back to me. Problem was thus solved.
But the incident does point to some serious anomalies: with the passenger name and booking reference it is possible to change or cancel bookings online, and even check in (although for this you admittedly have to tick the box on the screen to say you have the passenger's authority to do so). And no attempt is made on the phone to verify the identity of the person identifying themselves as the passenger.
Any comment from BA??
