UK domestic landline - alternative to BT ?

[coming here for some collective wisdom]

The family Mac are moving house next week, into a rented property (not a punt on a falling housing market, it just makes sense); the outgoing tenants are taking their landline number with them and BT tell us that they can't set up our landline for 2 weeks. The man that Mrs Mac spoke to was honest enough to say that he couldn't see any reason why it should take two weeks to set up, but 'that's what the system says'. Now I hate BT anyway, for their 'masters of confusion marketing' pricing and their 'we'll charge you 10% extra if you want to see a bill and call it environmentally friendly' crap, but I've always stayed with them because... well, they're BT and that's who does your landline in Britain, no ?

So now I have an incentive to find someone else and I have no idea where to start. I don't want a phone line and satellite tv (no thanks Sky or Virgin), I really just want a phone line. Can I get one ? And from who ?

as always, thanks in advance.

and kudos to the UK & I forum, which has all the best bits of the BA forum - humour, excellent advice, an unwillingness to take itself too seriously - but without some of the more annoying posters
