I only fly on AA once every other month roughly 1k miles round trip, averaging $500/trip.

and the AA account is under my name
This seems clear from context, but you do mean AS Mileage Plan, correct?

Living in Alaska, we find it useful for the yearly companion ticket alone.
Living in Seattle = same great deal. We have three cards between two of us, and always use all three companion certificates each year usually for Hawaii/Mexico/East Coast travel.

There are a lot of threads on this board about the ins and outs of using the certificates - keys are that the flight(s) must be AS/QX metal in either class of service, the card holder doesn't have to be one of the two travelers but the two travelers must travel together, and you have to pay the taxes on top of the $99 fee.
