The new thing for my PS upgrades is to book when NC=0 (but 20+ C seats open), then the UG clears overnight.

I'd say generally speaking, 1Ks have nothing to worry about upgrading. 1P spouse cleared 4-5 days in advance for upcoming JFK-LAX r/t.
