Service, service and service are also my top criteria--I don't want to have to wait too long for my car, for someone to pick up the phone, for help at the concierge desk, or for room service, and when it comes I want what I ordered. I also want the concierge to know more than I do after 30 minutes on the Internet about dining choices and to recognize and adapt to my likes, dislikes and interests---no, don't send me to the Hard Rock Cafe when I ask about post-theatre dining choices.
As for room furnishings, I prefer modern bathrooms with LOTs of counter space, (where the climate makes appropriate) heated floors, and large soaking tubs. I'm more flexible on room style, but will say that the hotels I have most liked were those that reflected to some extent where they were--so, for example, FS Budapest and Istanbul (the original one) rank higher in my book than the more generic ones.
