While I've never flown an AE operated DL coded flight, my guess is that whomever at Delta told you this misunderstood and thought you were asking about any American Eagle operated flight. As long as it has a DL code (regardless of who actually operates it) it follows rules for being credited as a DL flight. If I remember correctly, American Eagle is considered to be a Delta Connection carrier for those flights which a DL code is applied.
